To perceive the current state of natural and environmental situation of arid and semiarid China, in answer to the call of Western Development of China, it is intended to hold a Sino-German Workshop on Landscape and Environmental Changes in the Arid and Semiarid China. It is intended to hold the workshop in Lanzhou on Jul. 17-18 2007 with a subsequent optional 3-day's excursion to the dryland areas in the transition zone Badam Jaran/Tengger Desert-Helan Shan-Huang He. Heterogeneous landscape with landscape units of highly different potential and sensitivity combined with a long lasting settlement history and different landuse make this region an ideal 'field laboratory' for the research of past and present degradation processes, the identification of man-environment interactions and the development of management strategies and their implementation to combat degradation processes.
In
this symposium, leading scientists from China and Germany will
discuss processes and assessment procedures of past and present
desertification processes and techniques as well as management
measures to combat desertification. With this initiative we
directly contribute to the Memorandum of Understanding on joint
efforts to coordinate and facilitate Global Change Research between
Chinese National Committee for IHDP
(CNC-IHDP) and Germen National
Committee on Global Change Research (NKGCF) as it was adopted in
consequence of the 6th IHDP Open Meeting on Oct. 9th
2005, where as part of the Human
Dimensions Programme on Global
Environmental Change(IHDP) and the Earth
System Science Partnership
(ESSP) it was agreed to develop a bilateral Global Change Research
Programme with one focal point on "Ecological
Reconstruction
Mechanisms in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions/Role of Market
Mechanisms/Integrated Studies on Causes of Desertification".
The purpose of this workshop is to exhibit the newest results on
"Ecological Reconstruction Mechanisms in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions/Role of Market Mechanisms/Integrated Studies on Causes of Desertification"
focussing interdisciplinary expertise including various subjects such as physical geography, soil and water conservation, botany, husbandry, plant physiology, economy etc. Only considering the wide expertise of the multiply of these subjects processing of this ambitious topic will be possible.
It
will be a high-level workshop on "Ecological
Reconstruction
Mechanisms in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions/Role of Market
Mechanisms/Integrated Studies on Causes of Desertification"
China and Germany. All contributing scientists have made already
important contributions to the superordinate topic. In the workshop
it is intended to bring this expertise from different subjects
together and to discuss and plan future Sino-German joint research in
this field. Finally, this workshop will be a contribution to improve
communication and cooperation, as well as friendship of between
Chinese and German scientists.
